A premium sock yarn in hand-dyed colors. Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock is softer and more comfortable to wear than other brands, yet its nylon content makes it just as durable. Choose from Nearly-Solid colors, Self-Striping colors, or any of the fun Multi-Colored yarns. One pair of women's medium-sized socks requires two hanks of Shepherd Sock.

My favorite pattern for this yarn is the Conwy sock from Nancy's Bush's book, Knitting on the Road. This sock has a fitted leg and a small mock cable that looks very nice in the variegated yarns. Evelyn Clark's Waving Lace pattern from Spring 2004 Interweave knits is lovely in the near solids. The stitch definition in this yarn is very precise, so it looks nice in textured patterns. The yarn is also very soft on the feet, and looks almost like cotton. The only disadvantage is that the yarn does not wear as long as some other yarns that are tightly plyed. I keep my leftover yarn in order to make a reinforcement with duplicate stitch if I see signs of wear. I think that the colors in this yarn are a real selling point. This is my 3rd-ever pair of wool/nylon socks. And my first experience with Lorna's Laces. The difference in softness! I took one partial sock of another brand and my partial Lorna's Laces sock and made DH and his parents feel the difference. I made my kids feel the difference. We were all amazed. I am tempted to stop strangers on the street to make them feel the difference! Now, I am fairly thrifty, but here's my conclusion: It is WORTH the price difference for THIS particular high-end sock yarn. It's wonderfully soft, it knits up great, wears and washes well too. And the colors can't be beat (and the prices here too!) Lorna's Laces is the only one for me. In fact, I sold all my other sock yarn and now knit socks ONLY with Lorna's Laces. I am knitting one pair right now that isn't Lorna's but am doing so at the request of a friend. A very good friend. Shepherd Sock is simply the softest of the bunch, with a fine hand that knits up smooth and even. The color selection is fantastic, and I love the fact that many of the same colors are available in heavier weight yarn as well, so one could coordinate, should one so desire. I won't be knitting socks with any other yarn, now that I've used this one. Two balls will make a normal-sized pair of socks with a great deal of yarn left over; three balls will make two pairs and a bit, so that mitigates the cost a wee bit. Was this review helpful to you?
