The alpaca makes it soft, the viscose gives it a slight luster -- both together produce a garment with wonderful drape and hand! Rowan Felted Tweed knits up into an amazingly flat fabric that makes snuggly sweaters.

That yarn was Rowan Felted Tweed in Herb, and it's certainly as nubby, tweedy and yummy as it looks in the pictures. It's a breeze to knit: I didn't have any problems with splitting, making it easy to knit stockinette while looking elsewhere; I got the gauge recommended very easily (though it could definitely be knit more firmly than the ballband gauge); and it blocked crisply. The finished fabric has drape and a little stretch, surprising for a yarn that feels slightly stiff on the needles. The textured seed stitch in the sweater looks as good as the stockinette; and although this has been my "utility" pullover, sometimes laying in a heap where I throw it at the end of the day, it still looks good when plucked up to beat a chill (wrinkles fall out very quickly, but I don't recommend keeping a Felted Tweed sweater balled up!). It hasn't pilled significantly, but it's gained a little size, so that may indicate some hidden stretch in the yarn that you won't see while knitting. Besides the finished product, I have to say that one of the pleasures of knitting with Felted Tweed is anticipating the next bright viscose-blend slub: in Herb, the base color is pale green with white and black matte slubs and heathering, but it's also sprinkled with random azure-blue viscose slubs that really spark the overall texture and provide some entertainment when knitting long stretches of stockinette. Anyhow, I adore this yarn and would gladly use it again, whether in a Rowan sweater or something else. Was this review helpful to you?
